Snapchat has been around a few years now and is especially popular with millennials. When I first heard about it, people were already talking about the sexting aspect or even nudity on the site. I knew it wouldn’t be long before a lawsuit or two would start hitting my friends desks. Sure enough, with my newly understood impression of what snapchat was, I started hearing about cases right away.
1. Sexting While Driving –
Bad Idea! Duh, right? No would do this, right? Wrong! This happens more than I could even believe. This app offers people an even smaller barrier to entry on such a stupid idea. If someone was going to send a nude selfie before, they were also going to have to go to their camera, take a pic, then upload that pic to their text message app all before sending. Now, they can simply go to their app, take the pic and send to whomever they want in the blink of an eye. I guess there’s a danger here that people are also finding sexy? I don’t get it. Good way to lose a penis while driving.
2. Faking an Accidental Send –
Here’s one I wasn’t expecting. Both men and women seem to love this one. They take a sexy pic of themselves and send to their entire contact list, or more often a select few of 10-15+ people at once. Then they go back and tell everyone “I can’t believe I just did that! I am so embarrassed.”
No, this person isn’t embarrassed. If they really cared, it would not have been sent. This seems to be a particularly cruel trick girls will play with their boyfriends to get them jealous. They’ll even send a nude pic to their boyfriend and every ex boyfriend they’ve ever had. Truly despicable.
3. Assuming Pic Go Away –
Anyone who has had a smart phone longer than a few months has accidentally pushed enough buttons to have learned how to do a screen shot. Before you go on a snapchat sexting frenzy, you should remember that these pics around just out there for as long as you want them to be. They are now entered into the world and will be public forever.
So, the best thing to do when using snapchat is to be smart. Do not assume anything is private and remember you could be hurting people’s feelings. Just try to be a little smarter about your sexting, nude selfies, and apps that let you expose yourself all you want. Sometimes less is better, America.
